Wills then asked Edward Everett to give a speech. Everett was an important man. In the past, he had been the governor of Massachusetts, a U.S. senator, and the president of Harvard University. About five weeks later, Wills also wrote to President Lincoln, asking if he would come and make “a few … remarks.”4

The ceremony was seventeen days away. This did not give Lincoln much time to write a speech. He made some notes on a piece of paper. There were only eight sentences. When he penciled in a ninth sentence, he needed another piece of paper.

Lincoln made the six-hour trip to Gettysburg on November 18. Traveling with him were several government workers, some army and navy officers, and his friend Ward Lamon.
